Kentucky Wesleyan College

COMPARATIVE VERTEBRATE ANATOMY
BIO 3408
Spring 2002

Instructor: Dr. Steven D. Wilt, Office 203B, Ph. 852-3162, e-mail: swilt@kwc.edu

Purpose of the Course:

During this course, students will study structure of extant chordates--mainly vertebrates, primarily from laboratory work. Lecture will be concerned with the topics of phylogeny, function(s) related to structure (notably the concepts of analogy and homology), and some study of embryogenesis and organogenesis. While students will become adept at dissection, identifying/naming structures and understanding their function and relationships, a more pervasive objective of the course is in establishing the pattern for learning in this well-established discipline of biology.

Required Materials:

General Information:

This is a FOUR-semester hour course. Lecture sessions meet three times a week for a total of three hours and laboratory meets twice a week for a total of four hours. Because of the vicissitudes of experiential learning among individuals, variations among specimens, and the need to compensate for a shortened semester, it may be necessary to work in the lab at times other than during 3:00-5:00 Tuesday-Thursday. You may work in the lab at other times during the week as long as the lab is not in use for other courses. When necessary, students may also do lab work evenings and on weekends as announced by the instructor. IN ABSOLUTELY NO CASE CAN SPECIMENS BE REMOVED FROM THE LABORATORY. Also, students must insure that specimens are stowed properly and that laboratory areas--including sinks are clean.

Evaluation of the Course:

The final course grade will be derived from lecture grades and laboratory grades for a total of 1000 points. This grade for this course relies heavily on laboratory exams and dissection technique.  BIO 3408 is not simply a “cut and go” kind of lab, but more of a “dissect, study, and learn” course.  Letter grades will be assigned according to the traditional scale:

Lecture Grade:

                    Lecture quizzes.............................100 points
                    Lecture examinations.....................300 points

Lab Grade:

                    Lab Practicals...............................400 points
                    Dissection technique/quizzes..........100 points
                    Lab exercises/drawings………….100 points

Attendance Policy:

Attendance at all lecture and laboratory sessions is expected.  The Academic Dean must approve excused absences.  If you know that you are going to be absent before a session, notify the instructor in person, by telephone, or by e-mail. This will allow you to take a make-up quiz/examination. Otherwise, you will receive a "0" for the quiz/examination.
