KENTUCKY WESLEYAN ANNOUNCES ALL-SPORTS BANQUET AWARD WINNERS
Jeff Ward and Lauren Goffinet take Athlete of the Year Awards, 17 student-athletes recognized for academic honors
OWENSBORO, Ky. (April 29, 2013) — The Kentucky Wesleyan College athletic department held the third annual all-sports awards reception on Friday night at Jones Gymnasium in the Woodward Health and Recreation Center. Over 300 student-athletes in 17 varsity sports were honored.
Jeff Ward and Lauren Goffinet received the top honors as Male and Female Athletes of the Year for their athletic and academic performances.
Ward, a sophomore running back from Jasper, Ala. [Walker HS], led the Panthers in rushing with 339 yards on 71 carries and two touchdowns and pass receiving with 41 catches for 454 yards and five touchdowns. He earned second-team All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honors.
Goffinet, a senior guard from Tell City, Ind. [Tell City HS], helped KWC to their first Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division Championship game in history. She led the team in scoring with 11.8 points per game and three-pointers with 40 while finishing third in rebounds with 3.9 boards per contest in starting all 29 games.
Lucas Barker and Linda Albrecht captured the Freshman Male and Female Athlete of the year for their athletic and academic performance.
Barker, a guard from Cranbourne, Australia, led KWC in assists with 4.6 assists and averaged a second-best 10.1 points. He received Division II Bulletin All-Freshman Team recognition and the GLVC Freshman of the Year.
Albrecht, a setter from Indianapolis, Ind. [North Central HS], led the volleyball team in assists with 638 and tied for third in aces with 17. She also collected 31 kills and 135 digs. Albrecht was named to the All-KWC Classic Team.
Seventeen student-athletes were also honored for their academic achievements.
Seven posted a perfect 4.0 grade point average. They are Chelsea Brothers (volleyball) a sophomore from Indianapolis, Ind. [Southport HS]; Seth Burnette (cross country) a freshman from Morganfield, Ky. [Union County HS]; Leslie Chinn (soccer) a sophomore from Hartford, Ky. [Ohio County HS]; Paige Kramer (soccer) a junior from Owensboro [Daviess County HS]; Thomas Shifflett (baseball) a freshman from Russellville, Ky. [Russellville HS]; Mackenzie Weedman (soccer and softball) a freshman from Owensboro [Apollo HS]; and Emily Woodward (softball) a freshman from Owensboro [Owensboro Catholic HS].
Ten recorded a 3.5 gpa or better. They are Katelynn Armstrong (soccer), a senior from Paducah, Ky. [Heath HS]; Brittany Clark (cross country) a senior from Philpot, Ky. [Daviess County HS]; Tiffany Clark (cross country), a senior from Philpot, Ky. [Daviess County HS]; Joey Kramer (football), a senior from Owensboro [Daviess County HS]; Raley Owens (cross country), a senior from Owensboro [Apollo HS]; Taylor Owens (cross country), a senior from Owensboro [Apollo HS]; Jordan Rickert (volleyball), a junior from Louisville [Holy Cross HS]; Kyli Smithson (softball), a junior from Tell City, Ind. [Tell City HS]; Bailey Wilson (women's golf), a senior from Sellersburg, Ind. [Silver Creek HS]; and Matt Wilson (football), a senior from Columbus, Ind. [Columbus East HS].
Chaz Simpson (baseball), a senior from Louisville, Ky. [Fern Creek HS] along with Morgan Watson (volleyball), a senior from Collierville, Tenn. [Collierville HS] and Wilson, received the Stan Gallup Champion of Character Award for their example of unselfishness, teamwork and character with all the student-athletes.
Heath Williams (golf) a senior from Madisonville, Ky. [Madisonville North Hopkins HS] and Goffinet earned the Academic Student-Athlete of the Year for achieving the highest grade point average. The Team Academic Award went to Men's Golf with a 3.10 gpa and to Women's Cross Country with a 3.52 gpa.
Director of Athletics David Williams honored Gene Vanover with the All-American/All-Sports Club Members of the Year Award for donating their time and efforts to operate the Club's Car and Truck Show fund-raiser.
The reception was sponsored by the All-American/All-Sports Club, the official booster club of Kentucky Wesleyan's 17 sport programs.
