Owensboro, Ky. (Nov. 18, 2013) – The Kentucky Wesleyan Singers and Chamber Singers will present the third annual Festival of Lessons and Carols on Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Stephen Cathedral, on Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Third Baptist Church and Dec. 7 at 4 p.m. at Third Baptist Church. St. Stephen Cathedral is located at 610 Locust Street, and Third Baptist Church is located at 527 Allen Street. For reservations, contact Lou Ann Bowersox at 270-852-3104. The admission fee is $10 for adults and $5 for students.

The Festival of Lessons and Carols, a tradition begun in England on Christmas Eve in 1880, weaves scripture readings and carols of the season in stirring homage to the birth of Christ. A much-beloved version of the festival began at King’s College, Cambridge, in 1918, and is broadcast world-wide every Christmas Eve.

“The Festival has become a much anticipated Owensboro tradition,” said President Craig Turner. “We look forward to sharing the joy of this holy season in two of Owensboro’s most beautiful venues.”

The Festival of Lessons and Carols will be conducted by Dr. Bradley Naylor.  Mr. Patrick Ritsch, the choir's accompanist, will play alongside area musicians in support of the choir. The Festival will include a wide array of Christmas music from many centuries and countries.

Dr. Naylor became the director of choral music at Kentucky Wesleyan College in August. He earned a bachelor of arts in music from Brown University, a master of music in choral conducting from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and a master and doctor of musical arts from the Yale University School of Music. He has served as minister of music at Duke Memorial United Methodist Church in Durham, N.C., rehearsal conductor for the Choral Society of Durham and in numerous roles in New Haven, Conn. and other cities.

“The Festival of Lessons and Carols is a highlight of Christmas around the world, and I’m honored to join the Kentucky Wesleyan tradition here in Owensboro,” remarked Dr. Naylor. “Our students are preparing a beautiful, memorable event for our community. It’s the perfect way to celebrate the season.”
