Joel Utley to be honored for 50 years as Voice of the Panthers

Kentucky Wesleyan College will honor the "Voice of the Panthers" Joel Utley for his 50th season of broadcasting KWC basketball games on the radio on Dec. 2 at halftime of the men's game between the No. 11 Panthers and No. 2 Bellarmine University.

The 4-0 Lady Panthers play the Lady Knights at 5:15 p.m., and the 5-0 men follow at 7:30 p.m. at the Sportscenter in Owensboro.

It will be his 1,418 game behind the microphone where he has also called a record eight NCAA Division II Championships. Utley is regarded as the dean of all college basketball broadcasters in the state of Kentucky and rates in the Top Ten nationally in longevity.

Utley credits his career began as a young boy when he emulated broadcasts of St. Louis Cardinals baseball games and his hero Stan Musial when he used earmuffs for a headset, a shoebox for an amplifier and a stuffed sock as his microphone.
