Owensboro, Ky. (May 17, 2013) – Kentucky Wesleyan College Academic Dean Paula Dehn, Ph.D., announces an expansion of the College’s Study Abroad program with the appointment of Assistant Professor of English Tamara Coy as Coordinator, Study Abroad Program. Course offerings are designed to develop cultural competency in today’s globalized world and competitive job market. “Professor Coy lived in Europe for over 20 years and has traveled the world extensively,” remarked Dean Dehn. “She is passionate about encouraging our students to explore the world beyond their comfort zones.”
Course options are offered throughout the year, including Winter Term, Spring and Fall Breaks and Summer Session. They currently include study in Italy, Greece, England, Costa Rica, Cuba and the Virgin Islands. “Travel abroad increases student awareness of the world, but I always see another gratifying benefit,” shared Coy. “Students are often nervous when trips begin, but within a few days, they are competentlyexploring world cities and navigating public transportation on their own. The experience builds their confidence immensely.”
Professor Coy emphasizes the affordability of KWC’s Study Abroad programs. Grants, tuition reduction options, state and federal financial aid and scholarships are available for various programs. Her goals include expanding course offerings and increasing student participation. “Many of our students have very little travel experience. Study Abroad raises their awareness of the world and gives them confidence as they prepare for life and careers after KWC.”
