Pre-Optometry at KWC

About the Program
Kentucky Wesleyan College offers pre-professional preparation for students seeking admission to optometry school. Upon completion of KWC's program of study, you will be prepared to apply to an optometry program.

KWC's pre-optometry curriculum includes a minimum of five semesters of both biology and chemistry and two semesters each of physics and calculus. The remainder of the curriculum includes coursework necessary to fulfill degree requirements for your selected college of optometry.

Degree Options
As a KWC student, you have two options to gain acceptance into optometry programs:

The first option is to complete three years (minimum 90 hours) of study at KWC, fulfilling all requirements for admission to a professional program. You will then take the Optometry Admissions Test (OAT) and if you have superior grades and test scores, you may be accepted in optometry school after completing three years at KWC.

The second option is to complete a B.S. or B.A. degree at KWC. During your senior year, you will take the OAT and apply for optometry school admission.

Optometry School Preparation
Most optometry programs have a common core of undergraduate courses required for admission. After KWC Pre-Optometry students select two or three programs of interest, a faculty advisor assists you by providing guidance in determining the proper curriculum and preparing to take the OAT, and by furnishing letters of recommendation.

Most chemistry and biology majors at Kentucky Wesleyan receive academic scholarships. Many also serve as assistants in science laboratories, classrooms and offices. Assistantships provide valuable learning experiences for students. We encourage all pre-optometry students to participate in this program.

Summer Research
The faculty encourages students to take part in health science summer research programs in university and governmental laboratories. KWC students have recently participated in programs at the Universities of Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, Tennessee and New Mexico, as well as Vanderbilt University, Oak Ridge National Laboratories and the OMHS Cancer Research Center.
